HuatulcoHuatulco

Introduction to Huatulco

Huatulco is a coastal paradise with crystalline waters and various types of sand. It is located 277 km (171 mi) from Oaxaca and 50 minutes, by plane, from Mexico City. Because it is on the Pacific coast and has lowland jungle vegetation, the climate is hot and semi-humid, with an average temperature of 28º C (82º F) and sunny days throughout most of the year. This destination has nine bays, which are protected areas, and 36 beaches, which are part of the Bahias de Huatulco National Park. Most of the beaches have calm blue-green waters, such as those at the Tangolunda Bay, where you'll find top-notch hotel resorts, excellent plazas and one of the best golf courses on the Pacific coast. Another popular beach destination is the Santa Cruz Bay, considered one of the most important ecological reserves due to its coral reefs. Thanks to its abundant marine life, not only is an excellent spot for scuba diving and snorkeling, but it also hosts the annual Torneo de Pesca de Pez Vela (Sailfish Fishing Tournament) in April and May. When exploring these destinations, the vast natural beauty, the diverse landscapes and the many recreational activities that each one offers will leave you fascinated. What's more, Huatulco offers excellent tourist services and you'll find the people there very hospitable, allowing you to discover this destination's great culture, art, cuisine and natural wonders.

Huatulco has an international airport that receives flights from Mexico City and Oaxaca, and during the winter flights arrive from Toronto, Montreal, Chicago and Los Angeles. The following carriers operate out of Huatulco?s airport: Mexicana, Aeromexico, Continental Airlines and Aerocaribe. Apple Vacation and Mlt Vacations offer international charter flights, while Aerotucan, Magnitur and Viajes Liberacion provide local charters. By car, you can arrive from Mexico City by taking highways 95 and 200 (via Acapulco), which is a 939-km (582-mi) stretch. You can also take the Mexico-Oaxaca route to Pochutla, or the Istmo de Tehuantepec-Huatulco Highway, which is in much better conditions. There?s also bus service from Mexico City, Acapulco, Puerto Escondido and Pochutla on the following lines: Cristobal Colon, Estrella Blanca and Gacela.

You will love the clear waters found at any one of the bays. They are filled with fish so whether you put on the snorkel gear or gaze down from above you will see a great selection. Of the nine, Tangolunda and the Bay of Santa Cruz are the most popular. If you are searching for luxury, make your way to Tangolunda. The marina at the Bay of Santa Cruz is ideal for those wanting to climb aboard a boat tour. Entrega and Maguey and San Agustin are well known for their snorkeling and great seafood restaurants. Conejos has a beautiful white sand beach, as does Chahue. Other bays, such as Organo and Cacaluta are tucked away or are undeveloped making access to them quite difficult.

The beaches of Huatulco are peaceful. There are no massive crowds here and so you can actually enjoy the sound of the surf as it comes towards the shore. The abundance of fish, such as yellow tail tuna, mahi mahi and black marlin, help make the seafood creations in Huatulco out of this world. Whether you choose to catch your own or have it prepared for you, you will truly enjoy eating your meals here.

Should you need to take a break from all that glorious water and sand, you can enjoy the city known as La Crucecita. Its plaza is lined with trees and flowers. You will also see the locals and tourists hang about as they enjoy the shade the plaza provides. The church located here is a popular place to visit. Make sure you step inside to see the impressive mural that it is known for. Golfers will also enjoy one of the most beautiful golf courses in all of Mexico.

Although getting to Huatulco can prove to be a bit of a challenge, the effort is well worth it. It is a getaway not many have discovered and that means you can enjoy it without the throngs of people.
