Cruise Vacation Saved!
"As a travel agent, I helped a woman and her three teenage sons book a cruise to Alaska departing from Seward on a Saturday, including the air ticket. The family was ticketed to leave Kansas City at 6 a.m. Due to storms in the Midwest, the flight was rerouted and my clients were stranded in Salt Lake City. They faced a very real risk of missing the ship embarkation. The airlines wouldn't rebook them on another flight and the cruise line was unable to help. My clients were nearly hysterical, but I was able to find them seats in the computer, book them, and give the record locator to the customer. She was then able to get the airline to transfer the ticket to another flight. So far so good: my clients were again on their way to Anchorage.
"But the adventure doesn't stop here! The new flight was scheduled to arrive in Anchorage at 7:35 p.m., much too late to catch the three-hour bus to Seward. The cruise line didn't have an alternative other than to suggest they meet at the next port of call in Skagway, which would mean missing much of their trip. I contacted a passenger-plane company in Anchorage and chartered a plane to take them to Seward, a 30-minute flight. The passenger-plane company met our clients at the Anchorage airport, took them to the charter terminal and helped them on the plane. Our clients made it to Seward and were able to join the ship. The cost was $900. Fortunately, our clients had purchased Travelex Insurance Services travel insurance, so all of their additional expenses to join the cruise will be reimbursed!
"If my clients had not been able to make these arrangements, they would have missed the first two days of their cruise! Agents should remember that just because you book the air program with the cruise line, that doesn't automatically imply that the cruise line will accept responsibility for delays. They are not obligated to assist and they aren't likely to hold the ship! The moral of this story: recommend that your clients travel the day prior to alleviate this type of start to a vacation, and always sell insurance!"
