International Negotiations
"When Kirsten Casey, a travel agent at Cruise Holidays of Silverdale, WA, was asked to escort a group of 26 senior citizens on a cruise from Montreal to New York, she didn't think the trip would provide excitement before the ship had even left port.
As the group gathered in the hotel lobby prior to boarding Holland America Line ship, 68-year-old traveler Elaine was unable to find her purse. Kirsten helped her search, but it was nowhere to be found. Then Elaine remembered placing the bag on the floor, which means it had been stolen. The bag contained all of Elaine's cash, credit cards and travel documents.
Once they arrived at the ship, Kirsten learned that they would need to file a police report and have Elaine's birth certificate and driver's license faxed immediately. Elaine's son was contacted to assist. He hurriedly set about trying to comply with the cruise line's request. Time was of the essence: due to governmental regulations, Elaine would not be allowed to board the ship without proper documentation -- the ship was scheduled to leave at 9 p.m.
Without an emergency intervention by the U.S. Consulate, it looked like the ship would depart without Elaine on it. The fallback solution was for Elaine to meet with U.S. consular officials on the next business day to verify her identity. Once approved, she would need to arrange to meet the ship in port on Prince Edward Island. The downside: Elaine would miss nearly half of her cruise vacation.
Luckily, Kirsten had convinced Elaine to purchase Travelex Insurance Services travel insurance. When they called Travelex Insurance Services, our customer service representative, Celeste, sprang into action. First, Celeste called the U.S. Consulate in Montreal, but dealing with the official on duty was too slow to beat the cruise departure time. Celeste and her supervisor pursued the matter up the consular chain of command, contacting official after official. Finally, with 30 minutes to spare before the cruise departure, the cruise line received a call from the consulate and Elaine was allowed to board. Celeste and her colleagues' perseverance resolved what could have been a vacation-ruining event.
For travel agent Kirsten, being part of this experience has changed the way she provides service to her customers. Kirsten now actively encourages everyoneregardless of age to buy travel insurance and she shares this story with anyone who hesitates. According to Kirsten, Travelex Insurance Services came through so well. After our initial call, anyone we spoke with later knew exactly who we were and what the situation was. They didn't stop looking for a solution without exhausting the possibilities. It was so nice to have help."
